Director Ron Howard will drive the pace car at the Brickyard 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race July 29 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, track officials said Friday.

Howard is making a movie about motor racing, “Rush,” a drama that centers around the rivalry between Formula One drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda for the 1976 world championship.

I thought that Indy officials learned their lesson when an amateur crashed a pace car during a race in the 1970’s. The driver lost control at 140 MPH and slammed into some bleachers on pit road. “Opie Cunningham” has done some pretty awful movies lately and should not be rewarded with such an honor.
